I’ve been craving a good RPG — specifically D&D, and something set in the Forgotten Realms. After much debate, I settled on NWN2. (I can’t do BGII again. I’ve played it to death.)
I know my D&D, and I know the Realms, but I have some questions before I go down the rabbit hole:
Character limit: How many of my own created PCs can I have in my party in Neverwinter Nights 2? From my Googling, it looks like 4. Is that right? And if so, can I increase it to 5+ with a mod?

Graphic mods: Jester rounded up some “essential mods” here, with emphasis on graphic mods. Would you add anything to the list?
Character editor: I’m an old pen-and-paper player, and I like to have total control over my characters, even if it means sometimes bending the rules and taking a feat or spell I’m not technically allowed to have (the 2E books used to encourage players to bend the rules, so long as it wasn’t overpowered and it suited the character and campaign).
Is Vordan’s Hero Creator powerful enough to do that? Or should I look at an external editor for total control of my characters?
Modules: I like my D&D pretty dark and mature and close to the source material, like LotR or BGII. Can someone recommend modules in that vein? If modules get clownish or juvenile, I lose interest real fast — for example, if someone makes an adventure where I’m supposed to fuck a kobold, I’m gonna turn that off right away (there are some things that even I won't do for 20 gold pieces).
Lastly, what does it mean when Neverwinter Vault lists mod requirements, such as “OC” or “XP1”? Does that just mean Original Campaign, and Expansion Pack 1?

The Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition coming to Nintendo Switch will enable players to join a Dungeons & Dragons campaign with Xbox, mobile and PC players.
Originally released in 2002, Neverwinter Nights is based on the Dungeons & Dragons third edition rules, which introduced the d20 system of 20-sided dice rolls and modifiers that has become widely associated with the tabletop roleplaying series. While Neverwinter Nights includes a 60-hour campaign, in which you'll defeat a powerful cult and repel an attack on the city of Neverwinter, the game was also designed to be an expansive toolkit for creating custom D&D adventures, or modules.
The flourishing module scene for Neverwinter Nights included combat-focused arenas, online hangouts where adventurers could gather, custom campaigns and even D&D sex dungeons. The Enhanced Edition coming to the Nintendo Switch will include expansion packs and premium modules, including Shadows of Undrentide, Hordes of the Undark and Kingmaker.
Neverwinter nights adult modules. The Nintendo Switch edition of Neverwinter Nights looks to preserve many of the game's defining multiplayer features. 'Players will be able to play multiplayer with any module and we plan to offer access to most persistent world servers,' a representative for publisher Skybound Games confirmed to Newsweek. 'Curated mods will be available to download and install as well. PCs will also be able to host Xbox, Switch, and mobile using DM tools.'
It sounds as if Switch players will have access to select mods created by the PC community, but not the complex customization tools used to build their own. While crossplay between PC and Switch players will be included, only the PC side will have access to the Dungeon Master Client, which allows a single host to guide players through a module, control the world and hop into NPCs, similar to how a Dungeon Master operates in a tabletop D&D session.
While the Nintendo Switch edition of Neverwinter Nights may not be the best choice for prospective DMs, the console's portability could make it the perfect edition for player characters. With a Dungeon Master on PC and an assembled party on Switch handhelds, it's easy to see how the Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition could be used to recreate a reasonable facsimile of the D&D tabletop experience.

It took him seven years, but yesterday, game designer Drew Rechner finally released Baldur's Gate: Reloaded, a ridiculous mod that puts the entirety of BioWare's classic RPG—including the expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast—into Neverwinter Nights 2.
To play the mod, you'll need a copy of Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir (which you can get as one big package on GOG). Then you can download and install the mod for free right here.
I'm still kind of stunned that this exists, and I'm strongly considering re-buying NWN2 just to check it out. Rechner, who says the bulk of work on this mod was done by him and a programmer, Shallina, tells me this project helped him get into the game industry. He worked at TimeGate Studios (Section 8) until recently, and he was let go just before they shut down.
